Do Home Remodelers Help in Acquiring Permits for Renovations?

by Mike Dodd, Home Remodeling Expert

Question: Do home remodelers help with acquiring permits for renovations?

Answer: If your remodeling professional balks at helping with the building permit process, run the other way.  Not only should he/she assist in the process, they should actually be responsible for it and handle the total coordination of it.  To take it one step further, a homeowner should be extremely wary if they are asked to secure a building permit for a contractor.  There have always been two schools of thought regarding the permit process.  Some people don’t want “Big Brother” meddling in their affairs and will avoid the bureaucracy of that scenario at all costs.  The flip side is that building codes are intended to safeguard the construction process to the extent that life safety issues are never in doubt.  In a perfect world, your remodeler should both secure a permit as well as have the ability to do so, meaning he/she has the requisite credentials and insurance that distinguishes business legitimacy verses a fly by night operation.
